‘Make it fair’ – The Creative Rights in AI Coalition

An initiative by the Creative Rights in AI Coalition launched this week, aimed at highlighting the importance of upholding copyright law and ensuring that creatives and content publishers retain exclusive control over how their work is used in the context of AI. We are members of the PPA and the PPA is a member of this coalition, so in turn, we fully support their call to government to ‘Make it fair’ when reviewing the latest consultation on AI.

The Creative Rights in AI Coalition has been established to collectively urge the government to ‘make it fair’ and protect copyright by ensuring that creators across the UK’s thriving creative industries have control over how their content is used, as well as demanding transparency from the AI companies utilising it. This is the only way to drive long-term growth across both the creative and tech sectors in the UK.

Advancements in generative AI are entirely dependent on the high-quality, human-created data and content produced by the creative industries – it is the essential fuel behind the AI products we use today. There is enormous potential for licensing the content generated by UK creators, allowing the country to take a leading role in this market. However, this will only be possible if creators maintain proper control over their work and receive fair payment for its use. Tech firms are willing to pay for the vast amounts of electricity that power their data centres, and the right incentives will ensure they compensate creators appropriately as well.

The government’s consultation proposes weakening copyright law, undermining the creative industries, which contribute £126 billion to the UK economy and play a crucial role in our global influence. Without fair compensation, high-quality creative content will become increasingly difficult to produce, ultimately stalling innovation in generative AI.

The Creative Rights in AI Coalition are urging the government to uphold existing copyright law with meaningful transparency. This approach will foster a dynamic licensing market by preserving and reinforcing our copyright framework, ensuring that creatives retain exclusive control over how their work is used. Transparency will empower the creative industries to hold AI firms accountable, incentivising tech companies to comply with the law and fostering a mutually beneficial partnership.

Proper control for creators is the only viable path forward, allowing them to continue producing the creative works that generative AI firms could then access through licensing.

Make your voice heard by writing to your MP

The Creative Rights in AI Coalition has made it quick and simple to write to your MP by generating templates you can download. The PPA is encouraging members to make use of this resource to send clear message to MPs that creatives oppose the weakening of copyright protections for the benefit of AI firms, and want our rights to be protected.
